Jacques Cartier had been ordered by King Francois I to go and find more riches, land and a passageway to Asia. After his first voyage, the King had ordered him to go back and get riches. Cartier had claimed the land as France's by putting a cross in the Iroquois' village. He told the Iroquoians that it was a sign to show that they had arrived in Canada if they were to return again. We believe that King Francois I had provided the money for the trip, though there was no information about the financing.
