Positive Impacts On Canada
Even though it was by mistake, Cartier gave Canada it's name, from the word kanata referring the Iroquois village.Cartier thought that the chief was referring to the whole place. By 1547, Europeans called the whole area Canada and put the name on all the maps they made. Another deed Cartier did was that he started the fur trade. When Cartier first met the Iroquoians he offered them knives, iron goods, and a red hat for the chief. In exchange, the Native People gave them furs. Also Cartier was the first one to travel up the St. Lawrence river, where he sailed one thousand six hundred kilometers.
Negative Impacts On Canada
Although the Iroquois were nice and friendly, Cartier decided to take ten of them, including the village's leader and his two sons. He promised he would return them in a year. Four years passed until Cartier could go on his third voyages, and by then all the Natives except for one girl had died. When he returned he had to admit they died. The friendliness had ended. From then on the Iroquois were being hostile and murdered 35 of Cartier's men. Cartier went on and found and few jewels, but he was in a rush to get out of Canada. On his journey back to France he bumped into Roberval, who demanded Cartier to go back to Canada. Cartier ignored his orders and continued to sail to France.
